-amazing how vivid the memories of my movements of that day down to the minute. they replay in slow motion in my head.

the quiet early morning sounds of that morning fishing from a bass boat on Lake Henry in northeast PA, were interrupted by someone’s house phone ringing and ringing and ringing. it kept ringing for what seemed like minutes, no one around to answer because most of the lake houses were empty as a lot of vacationers had left on Sunday. as we continued along the lake’s edge making our way towards the dock we kept casting our rods. echoes of the ringing can still be heard as we secured the boat and walked into the house to prepare to pack our bags and close the house to head back to south jersey. while packing, we turned on the tv just after 10am and learned of the tragic events from earlier that morning. we were 3 hours from home where our 4.5 year old and 8.5 month old sons were with my husband’s parent. I remember the drive as normally being fairly quick but it suddenly turned into a drive that never ended. I recall staring out the window looking up at the clearest blue sky, empty of clouds and planes, fearing the worst as each mile marker flashed in my view as we continued south. I remember there barely being a soul on the northeast extension of the PA turnpike which is normally a very busy stretch. PA state troopers were more present than the drive up several days earlier. I remember the exact moment we arrived home and that feeling of relief finally seeing my boys, knowing they were safe and sound. it is forever etched in my memory.

ironically, today I struggle to remember the simplest of details and tasks, an unfortunate cognitive symptom of Lyme.

strange how tragedy makes memories permanent like a tattoo, making a simple smell, or sound a forever memory.

15 years later.
